Rickety Bridge - Foundation Stone
Royal blue, gold and cream is used from the previous label. A number of small Victorian details in the frame give it the Rickety Bridge feel. The grapes are all hand-picked and matured in large oval French oak barrels, and this is reflected in the cellar illustrations at the bottom of the label. The winemaker's two Ridge-back dogs watch over him while he works on a barrel. The middle part draws inspiration from elements of the old bridge. The barcode sits on the Rickety Bridge farm truck with a case of wine being stacked on-top.

Alheit Vineyards - Cartology
“We aim to vinify extraordinary Cape vineyards. In doing so, we hope to find the voice of the land itself. Whether that voice be a choir of amazing blocks blended into one bottle, or the purity and beauty of a single vineyard soloist.”
A complete corporate identity, label and website for Alheit vineyards, a young husband-and-wife winemaking team making some adventurous wines. Because the website features a large amount of type we opted for a newspaper style layout with headline-style titles, and halftoned sepia images.
CARTOLOGY (meaning the study of maps) is a vinous exploration of Cape heritage. It is intended to be a picture of the Cape, seen through the lens of her mature vineyards, in a given vintage. Therefore, the cuveé is composed of rare and extraordinary parcels of mature dryland bushvines. Naturally, the varieties used are also heritage varieties, namely Chenin Blanc and Semillon. They have been planted in the Cape for centuries.

As it is the 50th anniversary of 007, a Bond themed Christmas card was playfully fitting for the annual Rootstock Christmas Card. The gift card was illustrated as a “silent” comic with a touch of New Year celebrations. Black and gold foil completed the theme.

Porseleinberg
Porseleinberg, situated on top of a mountain in the Swartland has just released its first vintage. This wine is one of the most anticipated releases of all the new wine releases in South Africa this year, even though we designed the label two years ago. The aim was to design a premium wine that is both ‘green’ and unique. We proposed a wine label that that made use of the absolute minimum amount of printing. Letterpress printing has the smallest carbon footprint of all printing methods, so the owners of the farm decided to buy their own 1940’s Heidelberg printer, and the winemaker took on the position of printer himself. It took a year to get the letterpress machine restored and up and running on the mountain, and another year for the wine to mature. The name Porseleinberg translates to Porcelain Mountain and the fragile white label draws its inspiration from porcelain, whilst the motifs on the neck and the blue colour on the back is derived from Delft tiles, which were a popular feature in historical Cape Dutch homes.

Die Ouwingerdreeks
The idea behind this series is to raise awareness of the old vineyards of the Cape and also display the amazing wine that can be produced from these historic parcels of vines.
The Sadie Family decided to start farming these vineyards in their totality; and the good news is that the bigger critical mass of the project has led to a better scale of economy, which allows us to re-invest in the vineyards again.
The result after one year has been very good: better vineyards and better production and a growing awareness of the potential of these old die-hards.
Each name is hand-crafted typography and inspired by the wine and its characteristics, almost like the cover of a book. The wax colour of each capsule also fits the terroir of the wine.

Swartland Independent
It represents the coming together of a group of like-minded wine-growers in the Swartland region of the Western Cape. What they share most of all, these producers, is a wish to make wines that are a true expression of their origin - of the broad landscape of the Swartland. Wines that, though coming from different cellars and sometimes different areas, will all speak of the greater landscape - wines that will, in a sense, bear the DNA of the region.
